Dorchen Richter

Dorchen Richter (1891–1933) was the first known person to undergo complete male-to-female gender reassignment surgery.  She was one of a number of transgender people in the care of sex-research pioneer Magnus Hirschfeld at Berlin's Institute for Sexual Research during the 1920s and early 1930s. She underwent surgical removal of the testicles in 1922, followed in 1931 by removal of the penis and vaginoplasty. She is presumed to have died in a Nazi attack on the Institute.   Richter was born to a poor farming family in 1891, named Rudolph, and raised as male. Early in childhood, Richter displayed a "tendency to act and carry on in a feminine way". At the age of 6 years, she apparently tried to remove her penis with a tourniquet. Using the name Dora, she began wearing women's clothing and presenting as female, working under her birth name as a waiter in Berlin hotels during the busy summer season, then living as female the remainder of the year. She was arrested from ...

Kimberli Story

Kimberli's Story   Kimberli Business Administrator. Kimberli transitioned when young. She is married and has adopted 4 children.   My name is Kimberli. I am many things, a mother, a wife of seven years and finally a transsexual woman. When I first thought about joining the ranks of the other women on this success page I couldn't imagine that I should be there. After all, I have spent the better part of fifteen years living in stealth mode and denying to myself that I was anything more than just a "normal" woman. After all, I am a mother and a wife and I didn't spend the huge amounts of money that I had spent to be on a page announcing that I am a proud transsexual! It wasn't until I met and began to talk to the author of this wonderful page, Lynn Conway, that I realized that not only did I want to be on the page but that I needed to be on the page. Joining the ranks of many of these women is hardly something one can sneeze at. The...

Maryam Hatoon Molkara

Maryam Khatoonpour Molkara (Persian: مریم خاتون ملک‌آرا‎; 1950 – 25 March 2012) was a campaigner for the rights of transsexuals in Iran. Designated male at birth, she was later instrumental in obtaining a letter which acted as a fatwa enabling sex reassignment surgery to exist as part of a legal framework. As early as 1975, Molkara wrote letters to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then in exile in Iraq, asking for religious advice about being assigned a wrong gender at birth and having to break out of it. In 1978, she traveled to Paris, where Khomeini was then based, to try to make him aware about transgender rights. After the Islamic Revolution, she was fired from her job at television, injected with male hormones against her will and detained in a psychiatric institution. Because of good contacts with religious leaders, among them Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, she was released. Molkara continued to campaign for being able to get sex reassignment surgery. She confronted Khomeini in his ho...

Andra Colliaux

Andra's Story "Once upon a time, there was a little girl......Ooops..... boy" May I introduce myself, ANDRA COLLIAUX, a french girl who was born in 1966 in Paris. I should rather say that Bruno was born in 1966 in Paris.  Andra was born the 12th of April 2001 in Brighton in the U.K! I've written a book " Carnet de bord d'un steward devenu htesse de l'air " -  Editions Michel Lafon  (Diary of a steward who became a stewardess") in the year that I had my sex reassignment.  And I would like to explain to you the reason why I decided to do this kind of "coming out", writing a book, doing TV shows, posing for famous photographers - and participating in charity events such as the REACT exhibition in Paris this year, giving newspaper and magazine interviews, etc. Sex reassignment in France is a real mess!  France is far away from England, or the United States for example with transgender persons.  For...

I Want What I Want 1970

I Want What I Want  is 1970 film  A surprisingly touching, respectful, and accurate fictional portrayal of the coming out of a transgender woman in England in the early 1970’s. This film avoids nearly all of the “transploitation” themes of most works up to the 2000’s and is a “must see” for anyone interested in a transgender “coming out” story from 44 years ago. Note: for the purpose of clarity in the review, male pronouns are used for the transgender character until she presents on screen as female. This film, based on a 1966 novel by Geoff Brown, is the portrayal of the coming out of a transgender woman named Wendy in England, focusing on her relationship with her family and her process of learning on her own how to live as a woman. The film begins with our protagonist, who is initially named Roy and presenting as a male, watching women on the street outside the estate agent’s office [US: realtor’s] where he works. Roy, played by Anne Heywood, presents are a very femin...
